چکیده

We present an observational and theoretical study of the spiral structure in galaxy NGC 1566. A digitized image of NGC 1566 in I-band, obtained with the Australian National University 30in telescope, was used for measurements of the radial dependence of amplitude variations in the spiral arms. The azimuthal variations of the surface brightness in the I-band are about ±7 % at 50 radius and increase up to 57 % at 100. We use the known velocity dispersion in the disk of NGC 1566, together with its rotation curve, to construct linear and 2D nonlinear simulations which are then compared with observations. The linear stability analysis of the disk of NGC 1566, made under the assumption that the ratio of the vertical and the radial velocity dispersions is equal to 0.6, shows that the disk is stable with respect to spiral perturbations. We confirm this conclusion with 2D hydrodynamical simulations. National Astronomical Observatory, Mitaka, Tokyo 181–8588, Japan

Application of the global modal approach to spiral galaxies

We have tested the applicability of the global modal approach in the density wave theory of spiral structure for a sample of six spiral galaxies: NGC 488, NGC 628, NGC 1566, NGC 2985, NGC 3938 and NGC 6503. The galaxies demonstrate a variety of spiral patterns from the regular open and tightly wound spiral patterns to a multi-armed spiral structure. Using the observed radial distributions of th...

Application of the global modal approach to the spiral galaxies

We have tested the applicability of the global modal approach in the density wave theory of spiral structure for a sample of spiral galaxies with measured axisymmetric background properties. We report here the results of the simulations for four galaxies: NGC 488, NGC 628, NGC 1566, and NGC 3938. Using the observed radial distributions for the stellar velocity dispersions and the rotation veloc...

The detection of spiral arm modulation in the mass distribution of an optically flocculent galaxy

Spiral arm modulation in NGC 4062 (an optical flocculent) is detected for the first time; the Fourier spectra of NGC 4062 and NGC 5248 (a classic grand design in optical images) are almost identical. Within the framework of the Density Wave Theory (Lin and Shu 1964) and the the modal theory of galactic spiral structure (Bertin et al. 1989) the characteristic signature of a two-armed grand desig...

This paper presents Australia Telescope Compact Array H I synthesis observations of the weak blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxy NGC 2915. It is shown that NGC 2915 has the H I properties of a late type spiral galaxy (Sd Sm), including a double horn global profile, and H I spiral arms. The H I extends out to over five times the Holmberg radius, and 22 times the exponential scale length in the B ban...

Radio spectral index images of the spiral galaxies NGC 0628 , NGC 3627 , and NGC 7331

Aims. In order to understand the cosmic ray propagation mechanism in galaxies, and its correlation with the sites of star formation, we compare the spatially resolved radio spectral index of three spiral galaxies with their IR distribution. Methods. We present new low-frequency radio continuum observations of the galaxies NGC 0628, NGC 3627, and NGC 7331, taken at 327 MHz with the Very Large Ar...
